Michael Mullan – “Vermont is special in that it’s immersed in the natural world”

This week Creative Chair is in Vermont talking with illustrator Michael Mullan for the 30th instalment of our 50 States series.

Michael has a fun and functional style. We particularly like his creative maps, more of which you can see on Behance.

Tell us a little bit about what you do

I am an illustrator. My work is created through various methods combining digital and handmade elements.

“That mix of urban and country influence definitely plays out in my work”

Tangled

My work fits mainly within licensed home products, advertising, packaging, book + editorial illustration.

How has your state influenced the work that you do?

I’ve lived in Vermont for almost 10 years but come from the Chicago suburbs. That mix of urban and country influence definitely plays out in my work. Vermont is special in that it’s immersed in the natural world, more so than many other places I’ve lived and visited I think. I would not have considered myself an ‘outdoorsy’ type before but I totally embrace that now. Living here has absolutely influenced my artwork towards the greener.

The 121st 366 Award goes to Michael Mullan for his outstanding creative work.

Of your own work, what is your favourite project and why?

I’ve been working with Upper Pass Beer Co., a local brewery in Tunbridge, VT for the past few years. I designed their identity and worked on 5 can designs. It’s fun because I know them and meet with them in person. Beer can designs can be pretty open so in collaborating we get to throw out tons of crazy ideas, see what sticks, and luckily they have confidence that I will be able to make something of it. Plus, free beer.

And finally, if you died and got reincarnated as a song, what would that song be?
