Creative Chair interviews designer and prolific creative Jacob Cass
This week, Creative Chair is talking to designer, blogger, and travel enthusiast Jacob Cass. Currently, residing in New South Wales, Australia, Jacob and his wife have moved around the globe as though he’s running from the law.
The founder of JUST Creative, Jacob Cass has worked for an impressive roster of clients including Coca-Cola, Nike, and Disney.
We caught up with him to talk about his work and the design industry.
You’ve worked for some high-profile clients, including popular comedian Jerry Seinfeld. How was that connection made and what was the story behind it?
Working with Jerry Seinfeld was certainly a highlight. I was lucky enough to have the lead design role for the project while at Ammirati, an agency in New York City. I designed the logo, website, branding, advertising, social, etc for his show Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, which is now on Netflix. There were a few hands-on sessions, when it was just me, my graphics tablet, Jerry and the board of directors – that was a bit intimidating to say the least!
As someone with a passion and focus for logo design, what are your thoughts on Chris Do’s popular but controversial take on what to charge for a logo?
I just watched those videos, and have to say that the ‘value proposition’ take on design makes sense, although I am yet to charge 150k for a logo design. Designers should keep this theory and goal in mind, but just scale it back to what works for them. We all have to start somewhere!
As well as designing graphics as a job, you also blog on the subject (prolifically), speak about design (professionally), judge design contests, and there’s a rumour that you once tried to have sex with Times New Roman. With that in mind, my questions is, what do you think you’d be doing if you had never caught the design bug?
Times New Roman isn’t my type! They’re just rumours, mate!
Jokes aside, I would like to think that if I was not designing, I would be doing some sort of professional sport, such as Soccer, Rugby or DJing. That’s a sport right?
How did you catch the design bug?
Getting into design was a gradual progression for me. I naturally gravitated towards creative subjects at all points in my upbringing, but the path was really set straight when I was told by my career advisor about “graphic design” being a job. After this, I enrolled in graphic design courses, and eventually University. I just wish I had known of the career earlier, and that the internet was as resourceful as it is today! You can see my evolution here.
And finally, if you died and got reincarnated as a song, what would that song be?
Swedish House Mafia – Greyhound
A slow build up, then fucking rage! This tune gets me going every time.
